Why don’t most French & Italian wine labels state what grapes are in the wine? |
Most European wines are named for celebrated vineyard sites – such as Bordeaux or Chianti. New World wine labels usually bear the name of the grape in addition to a place name – Napa Valley Cabernet, for example. While this can make European wines a bit tricky to choose, they’re well worth the effort. Ask one of our employees for help. |

Why are so many wineries using screw caps instead of the more traditional corks? |
A compound sometimes found in cork makes wine smell like wet cardboard. Screw caps are sterile, not to mention being easier to open. |

What’s the difference between Syrah and Shiraz? |
The Syrah grape originates in southern France’s Rhone Valley where it produces bold, spicy reds. When the grape was transplanted to Australia it became known as Shiraz. (No one knows why.) Aussie Shiraz is big on fruit flavors. California wineries will use either name on their labels. |

Why do people swirl wine in their glass before drinking? |
To introduce oxygen and make the wine more aromatic. You can also pour the wine through an aerator. We carry two different types. |
